Jürgen (Juergen) came ro the Netherlands as a so-called "Hannekemaaier."
Hannekemaaiers
This is the way Jürgen Schnuck and his companions, most likely, traveled. From Gehrde
to Westerbroek via Tecklenburg, Rheine (then north along the river Eems), Lingen, Meppen, Haren, Boertange, Westerbroek.
They came from Westfalen in Germany. The area was rather impoverished and did not allow sufficient means for a breadwinner to take care of his family. Therefore they went over the border, to the wealthy Netherlands, as grassmowers (Hannekemaaiers), sailors, handymen, small tradesmen, etc. They were seasonal workers; and as all seasonal workers in the Netherlands, in those days of the 18th century, they were labeled as "Hannekemaaiers (maaier = grassmower) whether they were mowing grass or not. They did a lot of work that involved little thinking but a lot of sweat and no complaints: such as: grass mowers, hay stackers, bricklayers, gardeners, turf (bog) diggers and sailors on the high seas.
These men were very simply dressed, each one carrying a blue linen sack slung over his shoulder, a scythe wrapped in old socks over the other shoulder and a crooked pipe in his mouth; those were the hannekemaaiers! At least that is the picture we still have in Holland of the German grass mowers of years ago.
They came over the German/Dutch border to find work in the Dutch fields. Mainly in the rich meadows of Groningen and Friesland (Frisia), and in the province of Noord-Holland.
Each and every spring they left their poverty-stricken villages and settlements, by the hundreds, just to earn a few
shiny "daalders" by hard, back-breaking labor. Since they came from the country they had no great trouble finding work as "grassmaaiers" (people who mow grass) and thus they got the nickname "hannekemaaiers", in German Hankemeijer.
The word is, most likely, a compound noun coming from German: "Hanneke" -- a diminutive of "Hanne" or "Johannes" (John) -- and "maaier" or 'grassmower." As time wore on, the word underwent some changes and
nowadays the derived Dutch word "Hannes" often carries the meaning of an easy going guy, who is not too
bright, or who did something stupid.
Johann Eberhard Schnuck, son of Jürgen Schnuck who was married to Maria Elsabein Borgsteden, married Maria Adelheid Meijers. One of their children was Jürgen Schnuck. When he was only six years old his mother died and when he was nine his father died as well. I am sure that the village took care of the children; especially since there were so many "Schnucks" in Gehrde; but between 1805 (he was confirmed in the Evangelical Church in Gehrde on April 21, 1805) and November 15, 1823 when his first son was born in Westerbroek, the Netherlands, he moved as Hannekemaaier to the province of Groningen, the Netherlands (see map on previous page).
